A Level
Politics
Quick Summary
Three main areas – UK politics, US politics, and political ideas (conservatism, liberalism, socialism etc.)
Entirely essay-based – All assessment through written exams analysing philosophical arguments
Current affairs – Politics happens in real-time; you MUST follow the news
What's it actually like?

IN A NUTSHELL
A-Level Politics is exam-based with no coursework. You'll study UK politics (Parliament, elections, parties, democracy), US politics (Congress, the Presidency, the Constitution), and political ideas (conservatism, liberalism, socialism, feminism, etc.).
You'll analyse how political systems work, evaluate different forms of government, debate political ideologies, and discuss current political events. The course requires you to understand political theory whilst keeping up with real-world politics as it happens.
Exams involve essay questions and shorter structured questions, requiring you to construct evidence-based political arguments.
Politics suits people who want to understand how societies are governed and how change happens.

You MUST follow current affairs: Politics happens in real-time. If you don't follow the news, read newspapers, or pay attention to political events, you'll struggle. A-Level Politics assumes you're engaged with what's happening.
About the course
Is this for you?
A-Level Politics is about understanding how the country is run and how power works. You will study how governments are formed, how elections work, and how people and parties influence political decisions.
You will study UK politics, including Parliament, the Prime Minister, the courts, political parties, pressure groups, and voting behaviour. You will learn how laws are made and how political systems are meant to represent the public.
You will also study political ideas and ideologies such as conservatism, liberalism, socialism, and sometimes nationalism or feminism. This helps you understand why different people and parties believe different things about how society should be run.
Some courses also include US politics or global politics. Politics is mainly exam-based and involves a lot of essay writing, using examples, evidence, and arguments to explain and evaluate how well political systems work.
Politics is a good choice if you:
Are genuinely interested in politics, government, and current affairs
Enjoy debating different political viewpoints
Like constructing arguments and evaluating policies
Follow the news and find political developments fascinating
Can see connections between theory and real-world events
Enjoy essay writing and analytical thinking
Want to understand how power works in society
Can discuss politics objectively, even when I have strong opinions
Political literacy - You'll understand how political systems work, making you a more informed citizen and voter.
Critical analysis - Evaluating policies, ideologies, and political systems develops sophisticated analytical thinking.
Essay writing - Constructing evidence-based political arguments strengthens communication skills enormously.
Debate skills - Learning to present, defend, and critique political positions develops confidence in discussion.
Understanding diverse viewpoints - Studying different ideologies helps you understand perspectives across the political spectrum.
Current affairs awareness - Following politics keeps you informed about the world and how it's changing.
It's analytical, not just opinions: Having political opinions is fine, but A-Level Politics requires you to understand and evaluate all political perspectives objectively, even ones you disagree with.
Essay writing is constant: Every exam is essays. If you dislike writing, Politics isn't for you.
US politics is a major component: You'll spend significant time on American politics – Congress, the Presidency, federalism, the Constitution. If you're only interested in UK politics, be aware.
Political ideologies require understanding: You'll study conservatism, liberalism, socialism, and other ideologies in depth. This means understanding their philosophical foundations, not just current party positions.
It can get heated: People have strong political opinions. You need maturity to discuss politics respectfully and objectively, even on divisive issues.

Politics + Economics + Maths = For PPE routes at universityPolitics rewards staying informed and thinking objectively. Here's how to succeed:
Read news daily – Follow quality newspapers (The Guardian, The Times, Financial Times), news websites, or political podcasts. Daily engagement with political news is non-negotiable.
Learn all perspectives objectively – Study conservative, liberal, and socialist viewpoints fairly. Examiners reward balanced analysis, not political bias. Understand positions you disagree with.
Use current examples constantly – Link political theories to recent events, policies, and controversies. Recent, specific examples show genuine engagement and earn higher marks.
Know political thinkers deeply – For ideologies, know key thinkers (Burke, Mill, Marx, Friedan) and their arguments. Being able to cite political philosophers strengthens essays.
