How to Create a Productive A-Level Study Schedule Over Summer

Summer might be the season of sunshine and freedom—but for A-Level students, it’s also a prime time to get ahead.

With exams on the horizon and fewer academic distractions, the summer break offers a golden opportunity to revise effectively and build confidence before term starts. The key? A solid study schedule.

Here’s how to build a study plan that actually works—and still leaves time for some well-deserved summer fun.

🎯 Step 1: Set Clear Goals

Before diving into any schedule, ask yourself:

  • What subjects need the most attention?

  • Which topics am I struggling with?

  • Are there any coursework deadlines looming?

Set realistic goals for each subject. Use your syllabus as a checklist and aim to cover everything with time to review.

📅 Step 2: Map Out Your Summer Break

Start with a calendar and mark:

  • Important dates (family commitments, holidays, etc.)

  • Days you can fully dedicate to study

  • Days you’ll only have limited time

Then decide how many study days you realistically have. Don’t overload yourself—burnout is real.

⏰ Step 3: Break the Day Into Chunks

Work in short, focused bursts—the Pomodoro technique (25 minutes study, 5 minutes break) works wonders. Aim for:

  • 3–6 hours of revision a day

  • 45–90 minute blocks for deep work

  • 15–30 minute breaks in between

Example day:

Time

Activity

9:00–10:30

Chemistry Paper 1 practice

10:30–11:00

Break 🧃

11:00–12:30

Biology Paper 2 practice

12:30–1:30

Lunch 🍽️

1:30–3:00

3:00–3:30

3:30–4:30

We’ve created a Google Sheets spreadsheet where you can plug in your A-Levels and it produces a schedule for you.

🗂️ Step 4: Rotate Subjects Wisely

Avoid cramming one subject for hours. Rotate between topics to stay fresh. Try this pattern over a few days:

  • Day 1: Biology, Maths, Chemistry

  • Day 2: Maths, Chemistry, Biology

  • Day 3: Review + past papers

📄 Step 5: Prioritise Active Revision

Ditch passive reading and focus on active techniques:

  • Past papers & mark schemes

  • Mind maps

  • Flashcards (use Anki or Quizlet)

  • Teaching topics to a friend or family member

🧘 Step 6: Don’t Forget Balance

Yes, you need to study—but rest and play matter too. Make time for:

  • Daily exercise

  • Social time (even a phone call!)

  • Proper sleep (aim for 8 hours)

A refreshed brain = better memory and focus.

✅ Final Tip: Review Weekly

Each Sunday, check in with your progress:

  • What worked well?

  • What needs adjusting?

  • Are you on track with your goals?

Tweak your schedule as needed—flexibility is key!

You’ve got this. Summer is your time to get ahead, so use it wisely. With a smart plan, you can hit those A-Level goals and enjoy a few treats along the way.
