Robotics BEng/MEng

Robotics is one of the most exciting and innovative fields of engineering and computer science, combining mechanics, electronics and artificial intelligence to create intelligent machines. A Robotics degree prepares you to design, build and program robotic systems for industries ranging from manufacturing and healthcare to space exploration and autonomous vehicles.


Course Structure

Most Robotics degrees in the UK are offered as Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) or Master of Engineering (MEng) programmes. A BEng usually takes three years full time, while an MEng lasts four years. Some universities also offer a placement or “sandwich” year in industry, giving you valuable professional experience. Teaching typically includes lectures, lab sessions, group projects and design challenges, with a strong emphasis on practical work.


Typical Modules

Modules vary by university, but you can expect to study:


  • Robotics design and control systems

  • Mechanical engineering fundamentals

  • Electronics and embedded systems

  • Sensors, actuators and machine perception

  • Programming for robotics (languages such as Python, C++ and MATLAB)

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning

  • Autonomous systems and mobile robotics

  • Human-robot interaction and ethics

  • Mechatronics and systems integration


In your final year, you will usually complete a major design or research project, often building a functioning robotic system.


Entry Requirements

Entry requirements differ across institutions, but most Robotics courses ask for:


  • A levels, typically including mathematics and physics, or equivalent qualifications such as BTECs in Engineering or the International Baccalaureate

  • GCSEs in English and mathematics at grade C/4 or above

  • Some universities may also value computing or design technology backgrounds

  • Applicants with strong mathematical and problem-solving ability are particularly well suited to this course.

Robotics graduates can expect starting salaries between £28,000 and £35,000 depending on the sector. With experience, salaries typically rise to £40,000 to £55,000. Specialist roles in AI, aerospace or medical robotics can exceed £60,000, while senior engineers, project leaders and consultants often earn significantly more.
