About the Course

  • What is an Animal Biology degree?

Animal Biology is a biological science degree focused on the structure, function, behaviour, and evolution of animals.
You’ll study animals at multiple levels, from molecular and cellular biology through to physiology, ecology, behaviour, and conservation.

The degree combines laboratory science with fieldwork and data analysis, allowing you to understand both how animals work internally and how they interact with their environments.

It is ideal for students interested in animals, wildlife, research, conservation, veterinary-related fields, or biological sciences more broadly.

    Why study Biology?

If you are fascinated by animals and want a strong scientific foundation, Animal Biology offers both depth and flexibility.

    It helps you understand:

    • How animal bodies function and adapt

    • The biological basis of behaviour and evolution

    • How animals interact with ecosystems

    • Human impacts on wildlife and biodiversity

    • How biological research informs conservation and health

The degree develops practical scientific skills that are transferable across many science and environmental careers.

  • This degree covers a range of topics such as:

    • Animal anatomy and physiology

    • Genetics and molecular biology

    • Evolution and biodiversity

    • Animal behaviour and ecology

    • Conservation biology and wildlife science

    • Research methods, statistics, and experimental design

  • Laboratory and fieldwork skills – enabling you to collect and analyse biological data accurately.

Scientific reasoning and data analysis – helping you interpret results and draw evidence-based conclusions.

Understanding of animal systems – from cellular processes to whole organisms and populations.

Critical thinking and problem-solving – preparing you to evaluate biological research.

Scientific communication – developing clear written and oral reporting skills.

  • A-levels or equivalent including Biology plus a second Science (such as Chemistry, Maths, Physics, or Environmental Science). Chemistry is beneficial.

    • Show genuine interest in animals, biology, or ecological systems.

    • Mention relevant subjects, fieldwork, lab work, or independent reading.

    • Highlight analytical skills, curiosity, and attention to detail.

    • Reflect on how animal biology links to your future goals.
