About the Course
What is Biological Sciences?
Biological Sciences is a broad life sciences degree that provides a strong foundation across multiple areas of biology.
Rather than specialising immediately, you’ll study a wide range of biological topics before choosing optional pathways in later years, such as genetics, microbiology, ecology, or human biology. The degree combines theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory and fieldwork skills and is ideal for students who want flexibility within the life sciences.
Why study Biological Sciences?
If you’re interested in biology but want time to explore different specialisms, Biological Sciences offers both breadth and choice.
It helps you understand:How cells, organisms, and ecosystems function
The molecular basis of life and disease
Evolution, genetics, and biodiversity
How biological research addresses global challenges
How science informs healthcare, conservation, and biotechnology
This degree keeps many scientific and professional pathways open.
A degree in biological sciences can include topics such as:
Cell and molecular biology
Genetics and genomics
Biochemistry and metabolism
Ecology, evolution, and biodiversity
Microbiology and immunology
Research methods and data analysis
Laboratory and fieldwork skills – enabling accurate data collection and experimental work.
Scientific analysis and reasoning – helping you interpret results and evaluate evidence.
Research and project management – supporting independent, long-term investigations.
Data handling and quantitative skills – preparing you for evidence-based decision-making.
Scientific communication – allowing you to present findings clearly in written and oral formats.
A-levels or equivalent including Biology plus a second Science (such as Chemistry, Maths, Physics, or Psychology). Chemistry is strongly recommended and sometimes required.
Show enthusiasm for biology and explain which areas interest you most.
Mention laboratory work, fieldwork, or science projects you have completed.
Demonstrate curiosity, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
Explain why a broad biological sciences degree suits your goals.
