About the Course

  • What Is a Botany or Plant Sciences Degree?

Botany, also known as Plant Sciences, is the scientific study of plants, from their cellular structure to their role in global ecosystems. You’ll explore how plants grow, reproduce, adapt, and support life through food, oxygen, and materials.

Why Study Botany or Plant Sciences?

Plants are essential to solving many of today’s biggest challenges - from food security to climate change and biodiversity loss. This degree is perfect if you love biology and the environment, enjoy fieldwork and research, and want a career that contributes to a greener, more sustainable future.

  • Most Botany and Plant Sciences degrees cover:

    • Plant biology, anatomy, and physiology

    • Ecology and environmental interactions

    • Plant genetics and biotechnology

    • Photosynthesis and plant metabolism

    • Taxonomy and plant identification

    • Conservation and biodiversity

    • Climate change and sustainable agriculture

Later in your course, you can usually specialise - for example, in tropical ecology, crop science, plant pathology, or genetic engineering.

  • Plant Identification – recognising plant species and understanding their taxonomy.

Laboratory Techniques – analysing plant cells, genetics, physiology, and biochemical processes.

Field Research Skills – conducting surveys, sampling vegetation, and studying ecosystems outdoors.

Data Analysis – interpreting ecological, genetic, and environmental data.

Plant Ecology & Conservation – understanding plant–environment interactions and supporting habitat protection.

  • A-levels or equivalent including Biology and preferably a second Science (such as Chemistry, Environmental Science, or Maths).

    • Show your enthusiasm for plants, biology, and environmental issues.

    • Mention any relevant fieldwork, gardening, or volunteering experience.

    • Reflect on why understanding plant life is essential to tackling global problems.

    • Include examples like biology coursework, conservation projects, or research interests.

    • The Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan – How plants and people shape each other.

    • Lab Girl by Hope Jahren – A memoir about life and research in plant science.

    • The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben – A fascinating look at how trees communicate and interact.

    • Plant Conservation: A Natural History Approach by Gary Krupnick and William Hahn – A deeper look at biodiversity and conservation.

    • Compare courses to find those focusing on ecology, genetics, or biotechnology.

    • Attend open days or field courses to see the labs and greenhouses.

    • Get involved in environmental volunteering or wildlife surveys.

    • Visit botanical gardens or plant science exhibitions for inspiration.

    • Plant Research - Plant scientist, botanical researcher, plant physiologist, plant ecologist

    • Conservation - Conservation botanist, rare plant conservation officer, botanical survey specialist, habitat restoration officer

    • Horticulture - Horticulturist, horticultural consultant, plant propagation specialist, nursery manager

    • Agriculture - Crop scientist, plant pathologist, agricultural scientist, agronomist

    • Botanical Gardens & Museums - Botanical garden curator, plant collections manager, herbarium curator, garden education officer

    • Environmental Consultancy - Environmental consultant (vegetation), ecological surveyor (plants), wetland specialist, environmental impact assessor

    • Plant Breeding - Plant breeding specialist, seed technologist, variety development scientist, genetic resources officer
