About the Course

  • What Is a Cyber Security Degree?


    Cyber Security is the study of how to defend digital systems and information from hackers, viruses, and cyber attacks. It combines computing, problem-solving, and investigation to protect data and technology in a connected world.


    Why Study Cyber Security?


    Every organisation, from banks and hospitals to governments, relies on secure systems. Studying Cyber Security gives you the technical skills and critical thinking needed to fight cybercrime, protect privacy, and keep people and businesses safe online.


  • Most Cyber Security degrees cover:


    • Computer networks and operating systems

    • Cyber defence and ethical hacking

    • Cryptography and data protection

    • Risk management and digital forensics

    • Security policies and governance

    • Cloud and web security

    • Programming and automation for security


    Later in your course, you can usually specialise, for example, in penetration testing, cyber law, or artificial intelligence for security.



    Degree Types


    • BSc (Bachelor of Science): Focuses on technical and practical aspects of cyber defence.

    • BEng or Integrated Master’s: A four-year degree offering deeper study in system security and research.

  • Threat Analysis – identifying vulnerabilities, cyber risks, and emerging security threats.


    Network & System Security – securing networks, operating systems, and digital infrastructure.


    Ethical Hacking Techniques – performing penetration testing to assess and strengthen defences.


    Incident Response – detecting, managing, and resolving security breaches effectively.


    Cryptography Foundations – understanding encryption, authentication, and secure communication methods.

  • A-levels or equivalent. Most universities accept a broad range but Maths, Computer Science, Physics, or Computing are beneficial.


    • Show your curiosity about technology and security.

    • Mention coding, problem-solving, or any experience with computer systems.

    • Include online courses, competitions, or security challenges (like Cyber Discovery or TryHackMe).

    • Explain why you want to help protect people and organisations from digital threats.
