About the Course

  • What Is a Landscape Architecture Degree?

    Landscape Architecture combines design, ecology, and planning to create functional, beautiful, and sustainable outdoor environments. It’s about shaping everything from parks and gardens to city streets, campuses, and nature reserves - balancing human needs with environmental responsibility.


    Why Study Landscape Architecture?

    Landscape architects help solve real challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, and urban development. This degree is perfect if you enjoy design, nature, and creativity, and want to improve how people live within the natural world.

  • Most Landscape Architecture degrees cover:


    • Landscape design and visual communication

    • Sustainable planning and green infrastructure

    • Computer-aided design (CAD) and GIS mapping

    • Landscape history and theory

    Later in your course, you can often specialise, for example, in urban regeneration, environmental restoration, or digital design.


    Degree Types

    • BLA (Bachelor of Landscape Architecture): A professionally focused degree recognised as the first step towards becoming a chartered landscape architect.

    • Some universities also offer BA or BSc routes that emphasise artistic or scientific approaches to landscape design.

  • Site Analysis – evaluating terrain, climate, vegetation, and land-use patterns for design decisions.


    Design & Planning – creating functional, sustainable outdoor spaces such as parks, gardens, and public realms.


    Environmental Understanding – integrating ecology, hydrology, and sustainability principles into landscape solutions.


    Technical Drafting & Modelling – using CAD, GIS, and 3D software to produce plans and visualisations.


    Project Coordination – collaborating with planners, architects, and engineers to develop and deliver landscape projects.

  • A-levels or equivalent including Art/Design or Geography, with Biology or Environmental Science also useful.

    Yes, if your BLA isn't accredited or you want specialized roles (landscape urbanism, ecological design, international projects).


    No, if you have accredited BLA and going into landscape architecture practice – professional pathway to chartership is standard route.

    • Landscape Architecture (MLA) – 1-2 years If BLA not accredited, this is required for Landscape Institute chartership. £32,000-£50,000+ chartered.

    • Landscape Urbanism (MA/MLA) – 1-2 years Urban design, masterplanning, public realm. AA/GSD prestigious programs.

    • Sustainable Landscape Planning (MSc) – 1 year Green infrastructure, climate adaptation, ecological design.

    • Landscape Institute Membership – Professional pathway 2 years structured training post-degree.
