About the Course

  • What Is a Sustainable Architecture Degree?

Sustainable Architecture combines design, science, and environmental awareness to create buildings that minimise their impact on the planet. It focuses on reducing carbon emissions, conserving resources, and improving wellbeing through smarter, greener design.

    Why Study Sustainable Architecture?

Climate change and urban growth are shaping how we build. This degree is ideal if you care about the environment and enjoy creative design, problem-solving, and technology. You’ll learn how architecture can be a force for positive change - designing spaces that are both beautiful and sustainable.

  • Most Sustainable Architecture degrees cover:

    • Architectural design and spatial planning

    • Environmental design and building performance

    • Renewable energy systems and materials science

    • Sustainable construction and life-cycle assessment

    • Building physics and energy modelling

    • Digital design and Building Information Modelling (BIM)

    • Urban ecology and climate-resilient design

Later in your course, you might specialise - for example, in smart cities, low-energy housing, or sustainable materials.

    Degree Types

    • BSc (Bachelor of Science): Focuses on the scientific, technical, and environmental aspects of architecture.

    • Some universities also offer BA (Hons) Sustainable Architecture with a greater emphasis on design and creativity.

  • Eco-focused Design – creating buildings that minimise environmental impact and maximise efficiency.

Energy & Climate Analysis – assessing energy use, carbon footprint, and climate-responsive strategies.

Sustainable Materials Knowledge – selecting low-impact, renewable, and high-performance construction materials.

Environmental Modelling – using tools to model daylighting, ventilation, energy performance, and thermal comfort.

Regulation & Green Standards – understanding sustainability frameworks such as BREEAM, LEED, and net-zero principles.

  • A-levels or equivalent. Many universities accept a broad range but Maths, Physics, Geography, Environmental Science, Art, or Design Technology are beneficial.

    • Show your enthusiasm for sustainability, design, and environmental issues.

    • Mention projects, volunteering, or research related to energy, climate, or buildings.

    • Reflect on how architecture can help communities live more sustainably.

    • Include examples like model-making, sketching, or technical design work.

    • Sustainable Energy – Without the Hot Air by David MacKay – A clear, data-driven look at sustainable energy.

    • The Green Studio Handbook by Alison Kwok and Walter Grondzik – Practical techniques for environmental design.
