About the Course

  • What Is a Midwifery Degree?

    Midwifery focuses on caring for women and families during pregnancy, labour, and after birth. You’ll learn to provide clinical, emotional, and educational support throughout the maternity journey - from antenatal check-ups to postnatal care and breastfeeding guidance.

  • Most Midwifery degrees cover:


    • Anatomy, physiology, and reproductive health

    • Pregnancy, labour, and birth care

    • Maternal and newborn health

    • Midwifery practice and professional ethics

    • Pharmacology and pain management

    • Infant feeding and postnatal care

    • Public health and safeguarding


    Later in your degree, you may specialise in areas such as high-risk pregnancy, neonatal care, or community midwifery.


    Degree Type

    • BSc (Bachelor of Science), BN (Bachelor of Nursing), or BMid (Bachelor of Midwifery) - all lead to registration as a Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

  • Antenatal Assessment – monitoring maternal and fetal health during pregnancy.


    Labour & Birth Support – providing safe, evidence-based care throughout childbirth.


    Postnatal Care – supporting recovery, breastfeeding, and early newborn development.


    Clinical Judgement – recognising complications quickly and responding appropriately.


    Communication & Advocacy – empowering women and families with compassionate, informed care.

  • A-levels or equivalent including at least one Science (Biology, Chemistry, or Psychology preferred). Some universities accept a broad range of subjects.


    • Explain your motivation to become a midwife and what draws you to caring for mothers and babies.

    • Mention any work experience in healthcare, childcare, or volunteering.

    • Highlight your compassion, communication, and teamwork skills.

    • Show awareness of the emotional and physical demands of midwifery.

    Universities may invite you to an interview or assessment day to explore your understanding of the profession and your values.
